scoutrees

So, the boy and I went to a Scouting event this morning with his original Scouting Group. He as a Scout, me as a parent.

The event was Scoutrees. It is a Scouting event that has been going on for forty-five years. It is a national event. Sometimes Scouts plant trees, sometimes they raise money for tree planting, sometimes they offer trees to be planted by individuals for donations, and I am sure there are many other variations.

This year, it was tree planting. They went to Baxter Conservation Area in Kars, Ontario. There were about a dozen plus Scouts: from Beaver Scouts (aged 5-7), Wolf Cub Scouts (aged 8-10) and Scouts (aged 11-14).

The plan was to plant two-hundred-and-fifty trees over two hours. They took less than an hour. These guys and gals were like machines. Even the parents chipped in, but it was mostly the young'uns.

It was a good old time. It is events like this that put the youth outdoors and helping their community, environment, and having a good time that makes Scouting worthwhile. Of course, being outdoors and learning bushcraft, woodcraft, scoutcraft, or whatever you like to call outdoor skills, is the biggest portion, but giving back is very important as well.

Plus, you get a really cool crest as well. I really like my new crest.

As one of the Scouters said this morning: Plant a tree and save the world.
