cj - day eight - the final countdown

Up at 6:00 am. Out of tent thirty minutes later. Final teardown, sort, and pack.

A lot of movement, stumbling in the ruts, folding and refolding. We were sorted by 9:00 am and in queue fifteen minutes later. The Scottish Guides departed on foot to their bus. Good-byes and handshakes.

Now, the waiting game. We were given an official number in queue: #3. However, airport travellers have priority. It is now 10:00 am, our official and arranged departure time.

Just a side note: the first day of CJ, I asked the self-acclaimed head honcho if the boy and I could depart early, separate from our group; say at 6:00 am or 8:00 am. He assured me that was possible and easy enough to do. I went a few days later to check on the possibility to do just that. Filled out a form and was told that basically we would get out when we got out; like a lottery. Okay. I was never contacted about my 8:00 am departure request.

11:00 am (Atlantic Time). Waiting.

12:00 noon. Waiting. Wait a minute. What? We are next? Cool.

Load most of the gear on the cube truck and hike down to the bus rally point with the rest.

1:00 pm. We are next on a bus.

1:14 pm. On the way to the fairgrounds.

1:28 pm. At fairgrounds. Pack our gear. Goodbyes and hugs.

2:00 pm. On the road to New Brunswick. We pull out. I stop. I run back over. One final round of hugs and goodbyes. Now we are on the road.

4:00 pm. Cross Nova Scotia - New Brunswick border. Stop for gas and coffee. Drop and spill hot coffee all over myself at truck. Send boy for iced, slushy coffee to replace it. It was almost as big as him. Two-a-half hours to drink it.

5:15 pm. Stop on highway for 15 minute power nap. Rocked like crazy by transport trucks.

6:30. Stop for gas again. Lady in front of us in SUV blocking pumps and blocking pumps for five minutes while playing with two chihuahuas in driver's seat. Finally, gas up and go.

8:00 pm. Doe, a deer, a female deer. She is standing in passing lane. Slow right down and she finally made the crossing. Safe and sound and jumping like a mountain goat.

8:45 pm. Stop to pickup Subway for dinner. This one had a drive-through. Never seen that before. And they should not. Choosing your bread, cheese, toppings. It takes forever. However, this guy was switched on. We hit the campground at 9:15.

9:30 pm. Settled in and set up for the night.

10:30 pm. Campfire. First one since last Saturday.

01:00 am. Quick shower and bedtime. Tomorrow, cross in to Quebec and traverse La Belle Province home. It should be interesting. Slow and steady wins the race. Smile and wave. Blah, blah, blah. Let us not get another speeding ticket. blbbl
