rideau trail maintenance - it begins

The boy and I went out and hit the trail this morning. Then we went in to the city to meet with the Rideau Trail Maintenance Coordinator for the Ottawa Section of the trail.

Nice guy. Another guy who wanted to be a trail maintainer was there too. We all brought someone with us. So, anyway, he showed us the basic tools and guidelines.

Pruners, loppers, bow saw, hammer, small pry bar, nails; sometimes a drill and screws. I have all that, no problem. I thought there would be some specialised tools. Not really. The basics are already what I have been doing. The only new part is keeping the trail markers in order and visible.

Just need to put it all together in to a pack and I will be able to do basic maintenance on the fly for loop part of my section and a few extra trips out for the remainder. The boy is keen too to take on the maintenance, which is great. That will dovetail with his Scouting requirements.

The tough or weird stuff we will figure out as we go.

The hiking has been going well for the boy and I. Over 120 km as of today for me. I will be done by the end of the week. The boy has managed nearly 25 km.

We cannot wait for the snow to be gone. There are some boardwalks that need repairing. There is one tree I need to get gone too I know of that is right across the trail.

Now to pick out a pack that will work for the tools and to sort my maps. Oh boy!
